About Us

About the community capacity building initiative (CCBI)

Incorporated in 2024 as a non-profit social enterprise offering tax, accounting, and financial literacy services and programming, CCBI is led by members of the communities it serves and rooted in community needs to create a long term resource equipped to support equity deserving individuals and the groups that serve them with the financial knowledge and skills needed to build long-term economic stability. We do this work by bringing over 25 years of experience in financial and accounting services, and over 30 years of social justice organizing.

CCBI exists to address systemic barriers that make financial services inaccessible, especially for underreprented 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Our Finance Clinic offers tailored, professional services open to the public, while our Community Clinic prioritizes low-income and underrepresented 2SLGBTQ+ individuals offering capacity-building programming, including financial and fiscal literacy education designed to empower and support long-term economic wellbeing.

The Community Capacity Building Initiative believes that economic well-being is integral to maintaining quality of life and recognizes that economic disparity can have far-reaching impacts on individuals and communities, affecting everything from access to healthcare and food to stress levels and mental health.

Our mission

CCBI Mission

Our mission is to provide professional tax and accounting services OPEN TO ALL through our Finance clinic while developing collaborative programming that prioritizes economic well-being in under-represented 2SLGBTQ+ communities through our Community clinic. Through accessible financial and fiscal services and education, we strive to foster long-term financial stability, inclusion, capacity building, and resilience within our communities.

What is CCBI’s vision?

Our long-term vision is to build holistic, sustainable, intersectional economic ecosystems that foster community mutual aid, empower entrepreneurs, and equitable job markets.

  • We believes that change to our economic position isn’t possible without considering the constellations of people and communities involved and the complex power and structural dynamics that shape economic access.
  • We believe that true sustainability requires reconciliation, reparative justice, and the redistribution of resources to address systemic harm.
  • We affirm the right to self-determination, access to the resources, knowledge, and support needed to shape futures free from systemic barriers.

What are CCBI's values?

Integrity and Accountability

We value earning the trust of those we serve by holding ourselves accountable to high professional and ethical standards. Transparency, honesty, and accountability are at the core of our work, ensuring that we consistently earn and maintain that trust.

Empowerment and Capacity Building

We are committed to capacity building by empowering individuals and communities with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed for long-term success. Our focus on capacity building ensures sustainable growth and development.

Collaboration and Partnership

We believe in the power of collective action and actively seek partnerships with organizations, professionals, and community members, bringing much needed voices to the table. Through collaboration, we strengthen our impact and ensure our services remain relevant and effective.

Equity and advocacy

We embrace and celebrate the diverse skills and identities within our communities while advocating for self-determination and systemic change. We strive to develop solutions that address the barriers disproportionately affecting underrepresented communities.

More About Community Capacity Building Initiative

Who is CCBI's Network?

CCBI’s work is rooted in strategic partnerships and collaborations with professionals, businesses, community organizations, and corporate collaborators across Canada that share our commitment to economic justice and financial empowerment.

By fostering intentional, values-aligned partnerships, we expand our reach, strengthen our programs, and ensure safer, more sustainable access to financial and fiscal resources for 2SLGBTQ+ communities.

Our network includes:

  1. Professionals and businesses who contribute expertise, mentorship, and financial support.
  2. Community organizations and grassroots initiatives that provide and/or need support.
  3. Corporate collaborators who align with our mission to advance economic well-being and social equity.
  4. Funders that share our values of equity, intersectionality and economic empowerment

By working together, we amplify our collective impact and build a stronger, more resilient financial ecosystem for underrepresented 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and organizations.

Who is the Community Solidary Clinic for?

CCBI Free community programming primarily serves 2SLGBTQ+ individuals facing systemic economic barriers, as well as the community groups that support them. These communities often experience financial precarity, exclusion from critical resources, and discrimination in the job market, all of which deepen economic instability.

Many of the community organizations we work with are at maximum capacity, operating with limited financial and operational support while still going above and beyond for their communities. They are often overburdened by the demands of their work, making capacity-building opportunities an urgent necessity.

Our community spans a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and needs. While we primarily focus on local 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and organizations, due to the complexities of federal and provincial fiscal laws, our work is designed to foster cross-sector collaboration across Canada.

Through knowledge sharing and collective problem-solving, we center the human experience within bureaucratic frameworks and compliance, strengthening the ability to navigate these complexities with a bit more clarity and understanding and providing improved decision making.

Why does CCBI do this work?

  • In the short term, we aim to deliver collaborative programming that provides concrete financial skills and knowledge to underrepresented 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and the groups that support them.
  • In the long term, our goal is to contribute to a broader ecosystem of mutual aid, wealth redistribution, and community resilience, aiming for lasting economic empowerment for those most affected by systemic exclusion.

Financial and fiscal literacy is not just about number, it’s about economic survival and community resilience.

How is CCBI governed?

CCBI is currently under restructuration and will be presenting it's new governance structure at our Annual  General Meeting (AGM) in November, 2025.
Mark Phillips, CCBI’s lawyer, Le Groupe Consultant Apprentissage Saltwater Inc. and the Collective Legacy as well as a community advisory committee have been engaged to provide guidance and we're looking forward to presenting the final work!

The project analyses power structures and dynamics such as:

  • who can access the decision making structure and make policy
  • how is discord, conlict, harrassment addressed
  • HR policies, evaluation of leadership and wage gaps
  • and all future policies from financial and investment to data collection and storage.

Your funds support our mission and help to improve the economic & employment wellbeing of 2SLGBTQ+ communities.
