The Disability Tax Credit

Taxology – Episode 6: Explaining the Disability Tax Credit

 Professional advice:

The disability tax credit (DTC) is a non-refundable credit that helps persons with disabilities who have a severe and prolonged physical or mental impairment affecting their daily lives.

The credit can also help the family members who support the person with a disability to reduce the amount they may have to pay at tax time.

In this episode, a CRA expert explains the DTC, to help you understand the credit and the application process, and to clear up any misconceptions.

 Professional advice:

Opening a business bank account keeps your business and personal finances separate for easier accounting and tax filing as well as reduces the stress of your personal finances from being scrutinized by Canada Revenue Agency if a review or audit occur. Your bank may require registration with Revenue Quebec for your NEQ or Quebec business number

Registering your Sole Enterprise

Registering for your Quebec Business Number (NEQ)

Why Register for a Quebec Business Number (NEQ)?

  • You want to use a different legal name for your business (other than your personal name). Your legal name will still be used as your official business name but you will be able to use an additional name for your business for invoicing and marketing
  • You want to open a business bank account to separate your personal and business transactions. You will be able to claim the bank fees as a business expense

How to Register for an NEQ in Quebec (For Sole Proprietors)

What You Need:

  • Your legal name (as the business name)
  • Business address
  • Description of your business activities

 Steps:

  1. Go to the Registraire des entreprises du Québec (REQ) website.
  2. Select "Déclarer une nouvelle entreprise" (Declare a new business).
  3. Fill in your details, using your legal name as the business name.
  4. Pay the registration fee (~$38).
  5. Receive your 10-digit NEQ immediately after completing the online payment.

  1. Mandatory Registration:
    • You exceed $30,000 in self-employment revenue within 4 consecutive quarters.
    • You must register by the first day of the month following the quarter you exceeded the $30,000 threshold.
